Meet The King!
I’m the supervising animator and designer for this character!
The King was a very interesting character to design because of the rules of the world this film takes place in. In the weird, digital world of Defection, The King has complete and total control over every aspect he’s created, including his own appearance- meaning canonically, he designed himself. This presented an interesting challenge going into character design because I needed to think about which features he would include and which he would choose to omit.
I landed on a very abstract, shape-heavy design, which serves both narrative and production purposes. From an animation standpoint, his disjointed and simple design lends itself very well to rubber hose style animation, which is exactly what we wanted for this character who bends the rules of reality. His coloration of chromatic white line with black fill represents his altered digital state and his personality; he is a black hole who sucks in everything around him. His literal disjointed nature represents his mental state and disconnection from reality.
His features also represent his vulnerabilities- his lack of a neck reflects his intentional omission of that vulnerable spot. His gloves, while they add to his “iconic cartoon character-ness”, also reflect his fear of germs and being touched. And his ever so iconic smile, which he forces everyone to wear, reflects a masking technique. Even while speaking, his jaw never opens- he says it’s because he likes to smile, but in reality, he’s so stressed about maintaining control over his world that his jaw is constantly locked. He’s a fun character to supervise because of how much his mind has an impact over every element of himself!
The King is voiced by Ryan Eways and character supervised by me!
Meet Mira!
I assist with animation and voice this character!
Character Design and Turnaround by Kate Lau
Mira is a follower in The King’s world, and acts as our protagonist! Throughout the film, she realizes her idol isn’t who she thought he was as she attempts to escape his reality and manipulation.
As someone who grew up in The King’s reality, Mira doesn’t know anything else outside of this world even exists. Despite The King doing everything he can to squash his followers’ questioning, deep down she has this unexplainable urge to explore. She has an eye for the unusual and the different, collecting trinkets and having an appreciation for nature wherever she can find it. This poking and prodding she does within The King’s world eventually leads her to accidentally rip a tear in his reality, which causes her mask to break and lets her see things The King may be trying to hide.
Mira’s eyes are very important to her design because they needed to be expressive enough to let her emotions read without the audience seeing her entire face during the majority of the film. Many features in her design, including her hair shape and clothing, possess a butterfly motif - this symbolizes her evolution in her identity and her blooming bravery in defying someone she used to adore.
Compared to The King, Mira is animated and vocal performed in a much more grounded way, representing connection to reality. She is the first character I’ve ever voiced, and I’m excited for you to see and hear her after production wraps in 2027!
Mira is voiced by me and supervised by my co-director, Kate Lau!
